Post subject:  [~~Solved, the hard way]Strange Crash (may be a sound issue)

Hi there.

I've been playing Maniadrive on my two machines (both gentoo linux, one x86 and one amd64), I love the game, it's f* exciting, and I have the same problem on the two boxes.

After around 5 minutes (it seems random), the screen freezes, the sounds continues for 2 seconds, then it becomes garbage, and my system is stuck. I can login remotely and kill maniadrive, but after the kill, my system is really dead, I need to hard reboot.

Then, I have a new information this morning that made my day. For an unknown reason, the music did not start for one track. And I spent like 15 minutes on it (yeah, I kwow, but getting better at "Cactus hurts" takes time), without any problem. I had the sound effects (motor, turbos), but no music.

I then swapped to another track, and this time, the music loaded, and guess what.

4 minutes later, hard crash.

So, questions.

Is there a way to start without music (to confirm my idea) ?
Do you have any suggestion on what may be the cause of the problem ?

I'm using openal 20050504-r1.

And thanks again for the nice work. If I feel in the mood, I'd like to put in my 2cents with some blocks :p

Ok, my bad, it is not related to sound. I got the same issue (no music loaded) but the game crashed like 90 seconds later, in a similar way to crashs with music.

Hi

Try posting the console output here (just from the crash to the end, not all) Im using gentoo without any problems :)

Post subject:

You can simply turn off your sound system (is this a service in gentoo ?) or remove write access to /dev/dsp to disable all sound support (music and effects). To disable only music, simply remove ogg files "mania_music/".

As cghislai said, console output may help. I think that this hard crash makes almost impossible to retreive the end of the log, but try this switch: --logfile mylog.txt
If "magic SysReq keys" are enable on your distro, an alt+print.screen+s may help the log to be flushed to the drive.

Anyway, thanks to help ! :)

Thanks for your replies.

I tried without success:

Without music (with no ogg files)
Without sound (no write access to any sound device)
To get the logs of the crash (nothing appeared)

I also suspected an overheat of my video card, an ati Radeon 9500, but as I have the same problem on my amd64 box, with a good nvidia card, this is not the case (and I can play enemy territory on my ati without any trouble for nights).

The only lead I have now is that it comes from the configuration of my boxes, as I globally use the same settings on the two different arch.

I will try to compile from the source to see if it gets better, and I'll get back to you asap.

    Hey ! It's me again.

    I compiled from the sources (took some time to get the good libraries though~~), but no luck. Still the same crash. :(

    You should have logs... Try launching the game in a console:
    ./mania_drive.sh
    When the game crashes, go back to the console and it should have printed a lot of infos. To grab all of these in a file, and if the switch described by xfennec doesnt work, try
    ./mania2.sh > mylog
    When the game crashes, all info should have been written in the mylog file.

    You can post here all info related to the crash as well as the beggining of the log (the startup of the 3d engine)

    One more thing: You are not running the game as root, right?

    When I said "nothing appeared", I meant "nothing suspicious" (I might be wrong on that though).

    And I can't go back to the console after a crash. It's a strong lockup. Once I managed to login remotely but I was not able to reproduce it.

    And no, I'm not root. My user is in games though, as it is the Gentoo policy to do so.

    I dont see anything, too.

    Im using gentoo and i dont have any crash.
    Im using ~x86 packages, that can be the difference; but i guess stable versions works better.

    You could still try to upgrade openal to -r2 if you think the problem comes from there...

    One idea on the fly: do you have any oom-killer or similar in your syslogs? It happens when the system runs out of memory : the kernel kill one process, more or less randomly...

    Just one quick guess: I have a radeon 9500, and you know the quality of ati drivers..,

    MacTuitui, have you tried to send the output to a file?
    Something like
    Code:
    ./mania_drive.sh > crash_log.txt

    Even with a hard crash, the crash_log.txt file should have the output just the last flush.

    Yes, the output is shown above.

    [And my bad, I was so pissed at ATI yesterday that I forgot my amd64 box is running a geforce ^^;]

    Oh yes, sorry, i didn't see such "small" post :oops:
    One more thing.
    Can you install ldd?
    Then go to the folder of the game
    and type
    Code:
    ldd mania_drive.static

    You should get something like this

    Code:
           linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
            libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (0xb7ee4000)
            libGLU.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1 (0xb7e6d000)
            libasound.so.2 => /usr/lib/libasound.so.2 (0xb7dba000)
            libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libpthread.so.0 (0xb7da7000)
            libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (0xb7c79000)
            libXext.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXext.so.6 (0xb7c6c000)
            libX11.so.6 => /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 (0xb7bac000)
            libdl.so.2 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libdl.so.2 (0xb7ba7000)
            libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0xb7ac1000)
            libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libm.so.6 (0xb7a9e000)
            libGLcore.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1 (0xb7335000)
            libnvidia-tls.so.1 => /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1 (0xb7333000)
            libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7328000)
            /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f7a000)
            libXau.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXau.so.6 (0xb7324000)
            libXdmcp.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXdmcp.so.6 (0xb7320000)

    Is just to see about your dependencies.
    Useless? Maybe but it cost nothing...

    Ok, I was pissed at ATI, and I was right. I went to my local pc parts store, I bought a fanless GeForce 6200 for a few yens, spent one hour to get dual screen (not twin view) working as I wanted (and a couple of kernel compiles, but without that, where is the fun), got a slightly less result at glxgears, but guess what.

    ManiaDrive has not crashed. Some slowdowns, some sounds going a bit wild for 3 secs, but no crash. I even finished Canon1!

    So, to sum up: x86 and ati, bad. amd64 and geforce, bad. x86 and geforce, fun.

    I'm happy with that. If maniadrive works on my amd64, then I'll start play at work, and that is NOT good.

    Thanks for your support, and ManiaDrive is a hell of a game :D
