You're giving to few informations to answer directly to your question (OS ? Raydium release revision ? ...). The easiest way to find the reason of this issue would be to use the SVN, and update to every revision (from r822, the first revision of 2009, to r1042, the last of 2010).
You may try only revision related to shadows, textures and render, and use some sort of half-interval search (test r932: crash ? then test r910, and so on ...)
Once you've found the commit that makes the engine crash on your system, post it here so we can see if any workaround is possible.
