I hadn't thought of that.
Pretty soon after posting that, I figured out something about the car physics that helped a lot: The wheels have enough rotational angular momentum to flip the car over if you let go of the gas while in the air. The trick is to just keep the throttle wide open while flying through the air. You only flip over forwards if you hit the brakes.
This is the Evil Knievel trick. IIRC, he knew to turn off his bike after take off, so he wouldn't land upside down. I think I read about someone else trying to do a really long jump who didn't know about it, and crashed (maybe fatally)... Hmm, I really can't remember any details.
Anyway, armed with this new knowledge of how the car behaves, I no longer had problems with that checkpoint. And I can now agree that it is a feature, not a bug
