Understanding the 3-colour clues is simple, but can be extremely useful to improve your efficiency solving the Wordle.
Green tile:Letter is in the word, and is in the right position. This is the most certain information you can get from
Wordle. You know exactly where this letter should go in the word.
Yellow tile:Letter is in the word, but not in the right place. You know this letter is in the word, but is not in the position it has been put in.
Gray tile:Letter is not in the word. You will no longer guess this letter unless Hard Mode rules differ.
Green tile strategyYou must always guess this letter in that exact position. In Hard Mode you can’t avoid it but in Normal Mode you can still choose to, although you are wasting a guess.
Advantages of green tilesOnce you have 2 or 3 green tiles to work with you have significantly less possibilities to work with. For example, if you know the first letter is C, third letter is R and fifth letter is E, you know the word is C _ R _ E. There aren’t many English words that fit this pattern, meaning you can focus your guesses on finding the 2 missing letters.
Common mistake with green tilesSometimes people will guess a word that fits the green tiles but contains a letter that has been turned grey. This is wasting a guess. Always try to include the green letters in their correct positions AND include a new letter candidate.
Yellow tile strategyYellow tiles can be a bit more complicated to utilise.Rules:
Always include the letter. We know it is in the word.
Never in the same position. This provides no new information.
Strategy using yellow tiles
If we know a letter is in position 2 and it is yellow, we know it must be in position 1, 3, 4 or 5. If we guess it in position 4 and it comes back yellow we know it must be in position 1, 3 or 5. Every time we move a yellow letter we know it is 1 less position.
Multiple yellow tilesIf there are multiple different yellow tiles in a guess you need to ensure that each letter is not in their previous incorrect position. This can be tricky to do, but is where expert players can really shine.
Hard Mode yellow and green tilesIn Hard Mode you must include all revealed yellow tiles in your guesses. You must also keep the green tiles in their correct positions. This stops you from guessing a completely new word that doesn’t include any of the confirmed letters. Sometimes referred to as fishing. You must follow the constraints you have built up and this can be quite difficult but also much more rewarding when you finally figure out the Wordle.
ExampleLet’s say after your second guess you have a green E in position 5, an A in position 2 (yellow) and an N in position 4 (yellow). Your next guess must end with an E, include an A and N, the A must not be in position 2 and the N must not be in position 4. A good guess would be CRANE (C-R-A-N-E). However, the A is in position 3 and the N is in position 4. Wait! The N can’t be in position 4. A better guess would be INANE, LANCE, OCEAN or RAVEN. Ensure all constraints are met.
Managing your constraints will help you become a regular Wordle solver rather than someone who often needs 5 or 6 guesses.
